This is a sonnet but at the same time it has been written to lament in the death of Gandhi. In this sense, it’s an elegy written in the sonnet form. Because of form it is a sonnet and because of the subject-matter it’s an elegy. In this sense, it is an elegiac sonnet.
By far, independence and emancipation was the job of Gandhi. He wanted to liberate the Indian people from the hands of colonizers through the medium of non-violence. Emancipation and non-violence were the chief jobs of Gandhi. He finished his job in time. Here, the speaker glorifies the protagonist.
The whole universe is sorrow-laden. Universe has joined the mourning. Unlike the traditional elegy, this elegy does not give any consolation conveying the message that Gandhi’s death is irreparable. Now too we are lamenting his death.
